Food as medicine is not a new concept. It has been used for years as a replacement to medication by nutritionists and public health experts. However, nutrition has not been adopted into the curriculum by most medical schools. Therefore, physicians and health care providers often prescribe medications to help with health problems that could be resolved with simple changes in the diet. A survey conducted by Consumer Reports found that 55 percent of Americans regularly take a prescription medicine and those who use prescription drugs take about four and many also take over-the-counter drugs, vitamins and other supplements.

Inflammation is tied to many diseases that include asthma, sinusitis, sore throat, etc. To reduce inflammation, try changing to a mediterranean diet heavy in olive oil, fruits and vegetables. A mediterranean diet is known to improve memory, reduce your risk of heart disease, and fight depression. Also try drinking more water and exercising more often.

Americans eating habits seem to be getting worse. It’s reported that nearly 60 percent of the American diet is ultra-processed foods, loaded with unhealthy sugars, salt, and fat. So, it seems like everything is processed these days. How do you know what is processed versus unprocessed? According to Medical News Today, “foods that have been chemically processed and made solely from refined ingredients and artificial substances, are what is generally known as processed foods.” Common unhealthy processed foods include cereal, potato chips, most juices and sugary drinks, and ice cream. Remember to look at the ingredients and avoid artificial sweeteners and ingredients you’d normally not cook with at home.

As mentioned previously, eating healthy can prevent diseases, but it also can better your mental health, energy levels, and productivity. By eliminating processed foods and eating more “good” foods, you can change your lifestyle for the better. Try adding just an extra serving of veggies and fruits to your diet and eliminating one processed food like cereal in the morning. Replace that cereal with a banana and greek yogurt or avocado toast. Just make sure to look at the ingredients of the products you’re purchasing and go organic whenever possible.
